If you own a Canon Color imageCLASS LBP664Cdw, MF741Cdw, MF743Cdw, MF745Cdw or MF746Cdw, your printer takes Canon 055 toner. Canon makes it in two sizes: the standard 055 and the high-capacity 055H. Both fit the same printers, so the only real question is which one costs you less. Here is the math.

The short answer
The 055H costs about half as much per page for black (3.1¢ vs 6.3¢) and about 37% less per page for colour (5.3¢ vs 8.5¢). If you print regularly, the high-capacity cartridges are the better buy.
When the standard 055 makes sense
- You print very little. If a cartridge would take more than a year or two to use up, the lower up-front price of the 055 matters more than the cost per page.
- You only need one colour now. Colour lasers use four separate cartridges. If just one colour runs out and budget is tight this month, a standard cartridge gets you printing again for less.
- You are selling or replacing the printer soon. No point stocking up on high capacity for a printer you will not keep.
When the 055H is the better buy
- Offices and home businesses printing invoices, reports and labels every week.
- Mostly black printing. The 055H Black prints 7,600 pages, more than three times the standard cartridge, for only $90 more.
- You hate running out. Fewer cartridge changes means fewer "toner low" surprises in the middle of a print job.
A real-world example
Say your office prints 300 black-and-white pages a month. Over a year that is 3,600 pages.
- With 055 Black you would need about 1.6 cartridges a year, roughly $227.
- With 055H Black you would use under half a cartridge, roughly $111.
That is a saving of over $100 a year on black toner alone, and the 055H would last you more than two years.
Can I mix 055 and 055H?
Yes. Each colour is a separate cartridge, so you can use a 055H Black with standard 055 colours, or any other mix. The printer does not care. Many offices buy high-capacity black, because black runs out first, and standard colours.
